IMAGINE..... Imagine 3 doctors, 1 nurse and 7 others from different walks of life joined together to make up the People for Haiti January team....Imagine seeing 1075 patients in 3 days.....Imagine a young boy near death carried (who knows how far) to the clinic on the mountain in his grandfather’s arms diagnosed with possible meningitis......Imagine children as young as 7, sometimes with younger siblings in tow, coming to see the doctors all by themselves.....Imagine not having running water, indoor plumbing or electricity.....Imagine waking each day with the need to help

I am 12 years old student in seventh grade at the Academy at the Lakes, in Land O’ Lakes, Florida. While my mom was in Haiti last year, I was able to Skype with two teenage girls that live at the orphanage. From then on I wanted to go to Haiti. This past January, my wish came true. My mom and I traveled with three doctors and six other people. During the medical clinics, I was asked to help out with crowd control, weighing the children before seeing the doctors,

People for Haiti was introduced to me by my dear friend Tammy Denbo. Tammy has always had a compassionate heart and has donated countless hours to multiple charities. People for Haiti was different though - it seemed to consume her (in the best way possible). After a few casual mentions, I decided to do some research and check out the People for Haiti website. I was immediately hooked. The photos and stories on the website were swirling in my mind and I too became consumed. When can I go? How

The view out of the airplane window as we approached Haiti was tranquil. The beautiful bright blue Caribbean waters with hues of green lapping up on the shores of a golden land. As I soon discovered, this peaceful scene was a dream for the people on the ground. Rubble, dust, disease and daily suffering were their reality. During my trip I was touched by so much that I saw. One such moment came under the hot sun in 'Bercy', at one of the clinics that Guiga had arranged. A 10

I am an attorney with the federal government and a mother of three children. On January 19, 2011, I traveled to Haiti with “People for Haiti” for the second time. My first trip was mostly spent in the orphanage organizing the medical supplies for future medical teams. During this second trip, I got to be part of a medical clinic and work with a team of highly dedicated and thoughtful people from all walks of life (both medical and non-medical). I also brought my 13-year old daughter

Have you ever promised someone that you want to truly help people? While interviewing for medical school, I guarantee every applicant has muttered these words, and rarely followed up with the true action of helping people at a sacrifice to yourself, or your family. I was one of those persons until January 19,2011 when I joined 10 relative strangers to travel to a foreign land with the sole intention of making a difference in over 1,000 lives. Thanks to the efforts of Guiga and Leo Vieira and Robert Ferreira, founders

Today I feel different... I feel like I want to scream so loud, and let everyone know how happy I am... I am exploding with happiness!!! Today, my baby girl is turning 7 years old... and to think that 1 year ago, I was going crazy organizing Leo’s 1st trip to Haiti... and look where we are now!!! Look how many wonderful people got involved and helped... I got the chance to meet so many amazing people that share the most important thing in life: the desire to help the

If a picture is worth a thousand words, you would need a thousand pictures to describe this experience. For some, this experience seems unobtainable. But let me tell you my experience started with a “Yoga in the Park” fundraiser and two months later I was on a plane to Haiti. My first trip was June 2010 and I didn’t know what to expect. However, I got much more than I could have ever hoped for. I met a girl named Natalie at the orphanage the day we arrived. She was dirty

A friend in haiti died last week. I'm not sure I even qualify to be called his friend, but he seemed like a friend. I saw him only a few months ago. He was a quadriplegic man who had been homebound for 15 years and had total care by his family. Dr. Phelps and I performed a toenail removal on him on our last trip and were amazed to find him in good health otherwise. Now he is gone. That is the reality in Haiti. Most likely he, like so

I’m 35 years old and prior to my January 2011 mission trip to Haiti, I felt I had accomplished most of my goals in life. I’m a 12 year attorney and an owner of my law firm. I lived a dream as a NFL cheerleader for the Buccaneers and received a Super Bowl ring. I am continually surrounded by loving friends and family, and I devote a large amount of time to working with charitable organizations in the Tampa Bay area. I thought I had just about all I ever
